Can India’s Spin Attack Stop Pakistan in the Gold Medal Match?

The moment of truth is about to arrive for India in the 2026 Asian Games as the mission for gold in cricket reaches its final destination against arch rivals Pakistan. On the slow and wearing pitches in Nisshin, the spin attack which does better is likely to come out on top.

Without even a seed of doubt, India start as favourites in this heavily one-sided rivalry. In 17 T20I encounters, India lead a hefty 14-3, including a current 6-win streak. Add to it the massive win in the semifinal over Sri Lanka and the predictions become even more daunting.

Even on paper, the names of the two squads simply cannot be matched. While Pakistan’s squad consists of names which are a potential mix about their future and some local talent, they look way too inexperienced against the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah. One can count the name of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the list of inexperience but even he can single-handedly destroy an opposition unit.

However, there can be a small tinge of worry for the defending champions. Their star-heavy batting lineup can be caught struggling sometimes against spin, as was seen in the one-off T20I against Japan. It is not like their struggles are well documented, but just that on some occasions, their all-out attack forgets to distinguish between aggression and recklessness.

There seems to be no such issue with the bowling department. Ever since India won the T20 World Cup via a thriller in the 2024 final, they have just gone from strength to strength. Their batting has become more powerful while their bowling has become incisive, with neither department depending on one man alone.

The only question remains to be seen is whether India will go in with a spin-heavy attack or a pace-dominated one, simply because of the pitch and conditions. So far, of the total wickets picked up by bowlers in this tournament, spinners have scalped 56 to the pacers’ 22.

Pakistan find themselves against the wall but as far as they are concerned, in every difficulty lies an opportunity. They might have scraped through to the final with a nervy win over Bangladesh but at the end of the day, a win is a win and that would have given them confidence.

Sahibzada Farhan possesses the potential to upset any bowling captain’s plans. If Farhan gets going in the final, his innings could well be the differentiator between the two sides. Inconsistency is their main enemy along with lack of experience.

After rain playing its part in the early part of the competition, we can expect fairly sunny skies for the final. There is some rain expected but the forecast is just 10%. This is just the second instance of Men’s cricket being played at the Asian games with the introduction coming in 2023. India do have a gold medal but the 2023 edition final against Afghanistan was washed out due to rain.

Hence, the gold medal had to be shared. This time around though, India would want to be the sole holders of the gold to make it a clean sweep for India at the Asian Games in both, Women and Men’s cricket.
