Another match, another record. Age continues to be just a number for Virat Kohli as he literally redefines the proverb of ageing like fine wine. On 27th September, 2026, in the first ODI against West Indies, the chase master aced the record of becoming the fastest to 15K runs in the format in terms of innings, prompting another comparison between him and the Little Master, Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli crossed the 15,000-mark in his 303rd inning, at an average of 59.13 and a strike rate of 94.3. 134 out of his 303 innings have seen scores of 50 or more, which means that he touches the 50-mark in a shade of every 2-odd innings. He is just the second player to reach this milestone.
Additionally, Kohli has achieved this feat faster than that of Tendulkar’s, reading 15,950 to 17,528 in terms of balls faced. Also, Tendulkar took 377 innings to reach the 15K mark. Comparing the hundreds, Kohli has 55 in ODIs, while at the same stage, Sachin had 41.
As per some statisticians, Virat’s runs-per-innings output reads almost 25% higher than that of Tendulkar’s at the same stage. But what stands out is Kohli’s consistency in the last few seasons. His journey from 14,000 ODI runs to 15,000 has taken just 16 innings – his second fastest to complete a block of 1000 runs, consisting of 11 scores in excess of 50 – roughly a decade ago, in 2016-17, he took just 14 innings to move from 7K to 8K runs.
Kohli’s statistical consistency measures even greater given the fact that the number of ODIs have come down with time. In this age of fast-paced cricket, we are mostly witnessing either T20Is or Tests. ODIs come almost as an exhibition package, due to the interest of the crowd slowly dwindling. However, the next few months will be of immense importance given the ODI World Cup next year, and Kohli indirectly announcing his possible retirement from the format post the mega event.
The statements in the above para match with the fact that Sachin Tendulkar got to the 15,000-mark 212 days quicker as compared to Kohli. The reason being – when SRT touched the 15K mark, it was mid-2007. An era which mostly witnessed Tests and ODIs, with T20s just beginning to take shape.
If we look at ODIs in the recent era, post the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Kohli has featured in 23 ODIs – India themselves have played just 30. Which means, the team itself is featuring in just 10 ODIs a year on average. Factor this with the fact that from 1996-2011, India were playing more than 30 ODIs per year on average. Massive drop.
Through his masterful knock of an unbeaten 139, Kohli registered his 60th hundred in List A cricket, equalling Tendulkar’s record for the most in this format, while he also became the first player to score 7000 ODI runs or more in a country, surpassing Sachin’s previous record of 6976 in India. What this comparison indicates is the journey of two different trajectories – While Sachin Tendulkar’s journey epitomised longevity and adaptation, Virat Kohli is the definition of consistency and efficiency in the modern era.
