It doesn’t need an excuse to make a tennis fan watch a match featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. And given the one-sidedness to the scoreline in the 2026 Laver Cup, this clash desperately lifted the spirits of the fans, getting an encounter worth watching.
After being drubbed 1-3 on Day 1, Team World bounced back superbly to win the first 2 matches of Saturday, taking a 5-3 lead. Hence, the onus was on the 7-time Grand Slam champion Alcaraz to bring Europe back on track. Additionally, Fritz had defeated the Spaniard in the 2025 edition, while roughly 24 hours back, the American had suffered a defeat to Alcaraz, in the doubles match late on Friday night.
The first set began as a normal office routine for the man from Murcia. He broke in the very first game and raced to a 2-0 lead. However, Fritz broke in the third game, to make it back on serve, only to be broken back in the next! Eventually, Carlos won the first set comfortably 6-3.
Just like the 2026 US Open quarterfinal, what seemed like a routine match for Alcaraz turned tides as the Spaniard’s serve let him down again. Conversely, Fritz improved his game and pretty soon, we were a set apiece with the American taking the second 6-4. And that brought us to a highly anticipated third set tiebreak – the race to 10.
As per sources, Carlos Alcaraz has a mouthwatering record of 14-2 in deciding tiebreaks. Not surprisingly, he zoomed to a 5-1 lead pretty quickly. But as is the nature of the game, Fritz bounced back, to make it 5-4. That was the start of the game of cat and mouse.
Winners, sharp serves, terrific returns, unforced and forced errors from both sides ensured that no one particular player held the advantage for too long. Eventually, Alcaraz earned 2 match points, extending his lead to 9-7. However, he was unable to convert either and suddenly, it was the turn of Fritz to gain a match point, at 11-10.
But it is never over when Alcaraz is in the middle. Staring at match point, the Spaniard returned a powerful forehand, forcing the American to mistime his own return. That was it. Alcaraz had decided that it was enough.
Point number 22 was followed by a couple of terrific returns – the first, a forehand winner and the other, forcing an error from Fritz and the Spaniard ended the tiebreak at 13-11. The crowd was literally thrilled to bits, even though Team World and its fans were chuffed. The win for Alcaraz was not a surprise at the start of the match – and that got propelled at the end of the first set and in the first half of the tiebreak – but to see Fritz come so close and then fall short, would have hurt.
To be honest, this was neither the only match in this tournament which had gone into a thrilling tiebreak, nor was it the only one which was exciting and filled with comebacks. But to see two popular players in the top 10 have a go at one another gave it the feeling of a Grand Slam encounter and the crowd was certainly not disappointed.
