Let’s simplify the title range a bit. The first 2 titles were spread across 8 years. The next 3 came in the span of 6 years. So why the uproar all of a sudden? Of course, the exit of long-term head coach Stephen Fleming demanded an apt replacement, but it is not just a mere replacement.
From 2008-2019, Chennai Super Kings had featured in every playoff of a season, reaching the finals 8 times out of 10 occasions. But since 2020, they have been eliminated before reaching the playoffs 5 out of 7 times. Of course, the other way to look at it is that the two times they reached the playoffs post 2019, they have reached and won the final. But where is the consistency?
And that is probably why the CSK management has gone for Zaheer Khan. Fondly known as Zak, the 2011 World Cup champion is not here just to occupy or step into someone else’s shoes. Having served as the director of cricket operations for Mumbai Indians and a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants, Zaheer has been credited with shaping the mentality and playing style of both the units.
A deeper study reveals that Stephen Fleming’s approach was structured and reliable, without a doubt. And that helped Chennai build a strong base for over a decade. But as times change, methods need to change too. And that’s where Khan steps in. His flexible, match-situation-driven-like styles are being perceived as the key to building the next era of CSK legends.
Additionally, Zaheer is known for his love for numbers, and hence, his experience can be used to construct a squad built through data, from recent form, and also his ability to shape up young bowlers. If we look at both MI and LSG, one thing which stands out for both teams is their Indian pace bowling attack. The Super Kings, often called Daddy’s Army, starting slowly and playing only in suitable conditions, will want to create a new image of themselves.
Not that Fleming did not have any free hand, but the CSK management has explicitly announced that Zak will have full autonomy in selecting his own backroom staff. With the IPL auctions usually slated in December, Khan’s keen insight into numbers could possibly help Chennai pick players to get back their competitive edge.
Titles can be won through different routes. But staying consistent and competitive is the best possible route. Zaheer, known for his intelligent processes, can instil a new belief in the current young squad. Go out there and bat out of your skins without being careless. Bring variations in your bowling and make the opposition strive for every run. Treat every match as a final and make the opponent think that CSK is not a one-way route team. The auctions would definitely be worth watching.
