Emma Navarro's rare health condition

Emma Navarro. Currently ranked 24th in the world, with a career best of 8th. 2024 US Open semi-finalist and winner of 3 singles titles on the WTA tour. A certain future star of USA tennis. However, there are quite a few problems in Navarro’s life.

In the fall of 2025, Emma was diagnosed with two chronic conditions –

    1. A. Relative Energy Deficiency In Sport (RED-S): A condition where the body lacks sufficient energy.

    2. B. Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism: An autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland, slowing metabolism and causing fatigue.

For years, the US star has been struggling with headaches, dizziness, brain fog and severe fatigue. Eventually, she decided to end her 2026 season prematurely, to recover fully before resuming playing from 2027.

While Navarro did realize that the symptoms she was getting and that too, regularly, were a bit too serious, a part of her brain wanted her to continue playing, as she had been on a good run of form. She had won 5 ITF titles and even reached a Challenger final in 2023. In 2024, she won her maiden WTA title in Hobart, and reached 6 semifinals, which included one at the prestigious US Open.

Understandably, the thought of a break could have led to the fear of losing form and momentum. Hence, Emma continued to soldier on, before eventually understanding that health comes first. In an emotional Instagram story, the US player expressed her frustrations getting the better of her, leading to complications in her relations with other people as well, such as team staff.

Navarro herself has admitted that things started to get worse from 2025. She faced 8 second-round exits and 6 third-round exits, due to deteriorating health, but with terrific willpower, also managed to reach the quarterfinals in 7 events. Finally, towards the end of that season. Emma Navarro decided to have a proper medical checkup and the chronic conditions were diagnosed.

In 2026, Emma tried to manage medications along with playing, but in the long run, she found it very difficult. What was more difficult was handling her brutal trolling, especially regarding her weight due to the medications, as people on the outside had no idea the pain she was going through. She did admit that the dizziness has faded and she has become mentally calm, but wants to eradicate this issue from the root.

A title win in Strasbourg and finishing runner-up in Nottingham, along with a quarterfinal finish at the US Open did seem to indicate that the American was finding her form back. But to play with half fitness is equally dangerous as playing with an injury. It never goes completely. Keeps on coming back.

Our hearts do go out to Emma Navarro for fighting a physical battle with her chronic conditions and handling criticism from all corners mentally. And we also need to respect her decision to take a total break and recover fully before coming out to play again. May the Almighty give the American the physical and mental strength to win this battle and come out with flying colours. Amen.
