Spotted at a very tender age, shifting to Mumbai at 10, sleeping in tents and selling pani puri for pocket money, this youngster has come a long way. Shaped under Jwala Singh, Jaiswal’s career got a big notice in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup – 400 runs at an average of 133.33, with 5 fifty-plus scores in 6 innings – 114 runs clear of the next best.
The Under-19 heroics meant that Yashasvi got a chance in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. The first season was pretty quiet, but the talent was there. And then, the runs started to flow. Three successive hundreds in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy, taking Mumbai to the final, put a rubber stamp on his abilities, and in the 2023 IPL, his fearsome combination with Jos Buttler for Rajasthan Royals, also including a 13-ball 50 – still the joint fastest fifty in the IPL – set the ball rolling.
The 2023 IPL heroics propelled Yashasvi Jaiswal to the international arena – this time in Men’s cricket. He was not bad for his first year, averaging close to 40 with a strike rate of close to 90 across formats – but that got a massive lift in 2024, and now, the stylish left-hander has become a key part of the Indian team at the opening slot.
The saying goes – when it rains, it pours. In his very first knock in international cricket, in a Test match against West Indies in Roseau, Jaiswal hammered 171, featuring 16 fours and a six. That gave the world the intimation that a new kid had arrived on the scene. But despite a solid start, Jaiswal was not quite able to maintain consistency in his scores. It almost became like a feast or famine for him, till 2024 changed things around.
A double century against England in Visakhapatnam followed by another double in Rajkot seemed to show that the consistency had finally come. And since then, it has not been just scores – they have been daddy scores. Since 2024, Jaiswal has registered 8 centuries – 4 of those have been in excess of 150, citing his hunger for runs.
In the same period mentioned above, Jaiswal has scored over 2900 runs across formats, at an average of 47.57 and a strike rate of over 75. As of now, because of the well-settled T20 Indian lineup, Yashasvi does not quite find a place in the XI, being mostly limited to Tests and ODIs. The youngster does possess a unique record – He has scored centuries in three different countries in his very first match over there.
Hence, there is no doubt that the talent is present. It is just a matter of that talent meeting opportunity. Accordingly, we feel that along with Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal can be one of the contenders to be one of the next Fab Four. Do chip in with your opinions in the comments section below.
